NioCAD Pty Ltd technology holding-company was formed to acquire the assets and intellectual property of the Superconductive Research Laboratory from the University of Stellenbosch. The University of Stellenbosch is one of the World's leading research universities, and is based in the town of Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

SRL is part of the University's Electrical and Electronics (E&E) Engineering Department under the direction of Prof. Willem J. Perold, the University's E&E Department's Chairman. SRL is at the cutting-edge of research, innovation and product development in the areas of advanced microelectronics and the related Electronic Design Automation (EDA) systems.

In particular, Prof. Willem Perold and his team of (PhD and MSc level) researchers and engineers at the SRL rank among the World's leading experts and innovators in the emerging sectors of superconductive integrated circuits and related software systems, with more than 30 peer-reviewed research papers to their names.

Through its acquisition of SRL's assets and intellectual property (IP), and with the formation of NioCAD Pty Ltd, NioCAD intends to be “first-to-market” and thus carve out dominant market positions in both the software and hardware sectors of the emerging superconductive microelectronics industry over the next 3-5 years, as there is not yet a leading industry player.
